The climate in Palma is typically Mediterranean. It has warm average temperatures and seasonal rains. In the summer it’s hot and dry. The average annual temperature is between 16ºC and 18ºC. During the summer, the maximum average is between 29 and 31ºC. The minimum average winter temperature (at night) is between 5 and 9ºC.
Extreme temperatures of over 35ºC and below -2ºC are frequently recorded. Sometimes it can get up to 41ºC in summer and fall to -6ºC in winter.
Mallorca’s annual rainfall varies depending on which part of the island you are on. Most of the island receives between 450mm and 650mm of precipitation over the year.
In the south they get around 350mm and in the high areas, like the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, the average is 1,500mm.
The rainiest months are in autumn, between September and November. 40% of the annual total falls within these months.
25% falls in spring, between March and May and 25% falls in winter, from December to February. The summer months, June to August, see only 10% of the yearly rain.
The rainfall patterns on the island are very irregular. They vary greatly from one year to the next. Droughts are not uncommon.
When it rains here, it really rains. Most of it is concentrated within a few days of heavy precipitation, some very heavy in autumn. The rest of the year, it tends to be quite light. |
