La Llotja was designed by an architect called Guillem Sagrera (the guy who designed the cathedral’s Portal del Mirador). This curious 15th century building is hard to classify; it looks like a mixture between a castle and a church. Apparently it’s neither. It was designed as the city’s exchange.
Whatever it’s purpose, the building is spectacular; with it’s huge twin turrets, spiraling pillars and massive rib vaulting…you’ll immediately be taken back in time; it’s easy to imagine merchants of 500 years ago haggling over silk, spices and silver here.
Nowadays, La Llotja is used as a cultural centre, where they hold temporary exhibitions. It’s open during the day from 11.00AM - 2.00PM, 5.00 - 9.00PM. Call: 971711705 for more information. |
