The journey from the northwest coast of the island to Palma is one of the most scenic on Mallorca.
The train line was opened 1912. Before this, people had to journey across the mountains of Mallorca or take the treacherous Palma-Sóller road. Travelling from Sóller to Palma used to be a nightmare. Nowadays, the northwestern coast is easily accessible to the city.
This is like taking a journey back in time. The train itself is almost exactly the same as it was 100 years ago; vintage railcars with mahogany panels and brass fittings.
The ride is quite slow and uneventful but the views are spectacular. The train passes through numerous mountain tunnels, giving us an idea of how difficult construction must have been. Some of these old trains are badly scratched and the windows can be very dirty. Make sure you pick a seat with a clear view cause there’s plenty to see.
